Propelling the Legacy: COMTO and WeDriveU Leaders Honor Black History Month
WeDriveU’s Ubuntu Employee Resource Group (ERG) hosted a powerful panel discussion that honored the past, reflected on the present, and looked boldly toward the future of leadership in transportation in celebration of Black History Month.
Ubuntu Steering Committee members Keyshana Jackson (General Manager, Austin), Chrishaun “Chris” Hollins (General Manager, St. Louis), and Sheila Williams (Safety Manager, Lansing, IL), welcomed distinguished chapter leaders from COMTO (Conference of Minority Transportation Officials):
- Yannis Banks, President, COMTO Austin Chapter
- Vivian Martain, President, COMTO St. Louis Chapter
- Rovaughn Graham, President, COMTO Chicago Chapter
The conversation opened the door to honest and impactful reflections, as panelists shared personal experiences shaped by resilience, growth, and a deep sense of responsibility. In an industry where representation still matters, their insights underscore what it means to lead with purpose and awareness — messages that align with WeDriveU’s mission to deliver mobility solutions that connect people to the places and moments that matter most in their lives.
Building Leadership Legacies
Throughout the discussion, powerful themes emerged for employees tuning in who support a wide range of transportation programs for WeDriveU’s public- and private-sector customers, from fixed-route bus service to paratransit, microtransit and shuttles. Themes included:
- authenticity in the face of expectations
- integrity when decisions are difficult
- courage in moments of uncertainty
- an unwavering commitment to excellence
Through personal stories and professional lessons, each leader bridged past and present, reminding us that legacy is not only inherited, it’s actively carried forward in the work we do every day.
One of the most moving moments of the webinar came when St. Louis COMTO President Vivian Martain shared a life-changing discovery: Rosa Parks was her great aunt.
“The connection of equity, inclusion, diversity… is right in my backyard. I am part of the bloodline of Black history. That lady deciding that she wasn’t going to give up her seat sparked the civil rights movement- and it was all on a bus.”
Her words brought the conversation full circle. Transportation has always been more than infrastructure—it has been a catalyst for change.
Leadership Shaped by Experience and Courage
Throughout the discussion, the panelists reflected on the moments that shaped their leadership; experiences defined by change, courage, and conviction.
Rovaughn Graham spoke about transitioning from bus operations to safety oversight, reinforcing that adaptability is essential in an evolving industry:
“Change is the one constant in life and in this industry; you have to be ready to adapt and keep an open mind.”
He noted that leadership often requires trusting your instincts and, at times, standing alone to uphold what is right; describing it as being a “committee of one,” even in the face of pressure or disagreement.
Vivian shared how confronting fear transformed her perspective and strengthened her resolve:
“If not me, then who?”
Overcoming Barriers Without Losing Yourself
When asked about the barriers they face as Black leaders in transportation, authenticity emerged as a cornerstone of their leadership. Yannis reflected on resisting pressure to conform:
“I refuse to conform; my identity is non-negotiable. Staying true to who you are is the key to achieving your goals.”
Vivian framed obstacles as opportunities. For her, barriers are not meant to intimidate — they are opportunities to redefine expectations. By refusing to internalize doubt, she transforms resistance into proof of excellence:
“When you walk past the obstacle and demonstrate success, you earn respect for yourself and the community you represent.”
Standing Alone With Integrity
Rovaughn emphasized that leadership often means standing alone with integrity, even in the face of pressure or systemic challenges. His words captured the quiet courage required to push back when decisions don’t serve the broader community, even when standing alone feels uncomfortable:
“Integrity isn’t always easy; sometimes you’re the only one standing up for what’s right.”
Their reflections made clear that overcoming barriers isn’t about assimilation or compromise. It’s about remaining rooted in your values, leading with conviction, and understanding that how you respond to obstacles shapes not just your own path, but the path for those who follow.
Hope for the Future of Transportation Leadership
The panelists expressed optimism for the next generation. Yannis finds inspiration in COMTO’s youth programs and the growing embrace of public transportation — aspects that WeDriveU embraces.
“The annual COMTO conference is re-energizing. The supportive, family-like bond among attendees shows that the future of leadership in transportation is strong.”
Rovaughn sees promise in young talent, scholarships, and programs like the AYA Innovation Challenge, noting interns are already shaping transit and will become future leaders. Vivian is inspired by the energy of emerging leaders, calling the moment “fertile ground for transformation” and excited to see how young leaders build on current progress.
Continuing the Momentum
The webinar closed with a reminder that Black history is not confined to a single month.
“It is conversations like this that help ensure the legacy continues through our work, our leadership, and our commitment to the community.”
Through storytelling, reflection, and bold honesty, the panel demonstrated that legacy is not something we inherit passively; it is something we build daily through service, integrity, and mentorship.
